Insider Threat Example: Programmer Sentenced To 30 Months In Jail And $81,200 Fine

Here’s a case I blogged about amost exactly a year ago, but it is worth revisiting since the sentencing for the crime was just handed down and it was significant. If you haven’t already, put this in your file of actual examples to incorporate into your information security and privacy awareness and training activities and content.
On January 8 a federal court in Newark, New Jersey, sentenced Yung-Hsun “Andy” Lin, a former systems administrator for Medco Health Solutions Inc., to 30 months in prison for transmitting computer code intended to wipe out data stored on Medco’s network; composed of more than 70 servers.

Software Licensing Infringement: Man Sentenced to 27 Months of Prison For Selling $700,000 Worth Of Illegally Copied Software

One of the earliest types of activities I did with regard to compliance was a desktop computer-by-computer audit of a subsidiary that my employer at the time had just acquired. This was in the first half of the 1990’s. I found one licensed copy each of around 15 different software programs they used for business. I found anywhere from 25 to 150 copies of each of the software packages throughout the organization. At that time it was common for businesses to be unaware of software licensing requirements. However, I did find a few cases of folks who had actually tried to make a profit off the copies by selling them to friends.

Laptop Theft Incident: Laptop Security Leads To Catching Drug Dealers

Some interesting news from right here in my back yard this week…
The Des Moines Register reported that a laptop was stolen along with other items stolen during a home burglery. The computer had a location-monitoring type of anti-theft package installed.

Privacy Incident: Ohio Board of Nursing Exposes Personal Information of 3,031 Individuals

The Columbus Dispatch reported today, “OHIO BOARD OF NURSING Error puts nurses‚Äô personal data online.”
Reportedly over the past two months the “names and Social Security numbers of 3,031 newly licensed nurses were posted online twice.”
